Chapter Nine

Cillian

I’m drawn out of sleep the next morning by voices from downstairs. At first, I feel a rush of excitement, thinking maybe Lucy is here, after having gone home late last night. But then I pick up a male voice that doesn’t belong to either of my brothers.

Curious, I throw on some clothes and head downstairs. I pick up more voices and wonder just how many people are in our house when I finally make it downstairs. My brothers are joined by four other men in our living room, faces I didn’t expect to see but that fill me with joy anyway.

“Holy shit! What the hell are you guys doing here?” I ask, as the four of them get to their feet and I give them each a big, brotherly hug.

“Well, Barry was telling us all about your crazy idea for the resort and we wanted to come help,” Noah Bryne says.

Noah Bryne and his three brothers have been our closest friends for as long as I can remember. Seamus spent a lot of time hanging out as teenagers with Noah and his twin, Neil, the two younger brothers, whereas the older brothers, Conor and Flynn, spent more time getting into trouble with me and, when we could drag him into our fuckery, Barry.

And as we’d gotten older and the few years between us mattered less and less, the seven of us had all hung around together, engaging in some pretty fucking legendary pub crawls.

“Seriously? You came all this way down here to help us with a project we haven’t even started?” I laugh.

“Well, Barry also told us about some of the local talent…” Neil says with a smirk, “And we thought we’d come take a taste.”

“Besides, we figured you three had been here long enough now to take advantage of the local nightlife, and figured you could show us a,” Flynn puts on a heavy, terrible fake Texas drawl and continues. “True Texas rip roarin’ good time!”

I snort.

“I think you guys are gonna be sorely disappointed,” I inform them. “There’s only one bar around here, unless you want to drive into the city, but if we do that, we’re renting a hotel, because I know full fuckin’ well none of us is gonna be in any shape to get back here.”

“What about cow tipping?” Noah asks. “Is that a real thing people do?”

The three of us crack up.

“No, it really isn’t,” Seamus says.

“Well, we’ll have a good time anyway,” Flynn says with a shrug.

“How long are you guys planning to stay?” Barry asks them.

“We’ve actually rented a house nearby for a couple of months,” Conor says, to our surprise.

“Wow, you guys are pretty serious about this!” Seamus says, surprised. “What about your business?”

“The beauty of delegation, my friend,” Neil says with a grin. “We’ve got enough people working for us now that we can divvy up tasks and all we really need to do is some computer shit. Log in, do a couple things, and the money practically makes itself!”

“Shit, wish we were making that kind of easy money,” I complain.
